My Advocacy Action Plan is all about literacy development and ensuring that each child has a book. My first focus is to do a book fair at my Internship site which will be open to the public. I plan on placing an ad in the local newspaper that would advertise the event. My question for all of you is, since not all people are subscribers to the paper, how else could I reach people? I want this event to be a well attended success, so, eventually, I could do this event at the schools.
I also think I would have an issue with the number of books. How can I make sure I have enough books for this event? It shouldn't be RSVP because not everyone will do it and I am not sending out formal invitations. What are your thoughts and ideas as to how I could tackle this worrisome issue.
You have a lot of options to get the word out.
ReplyDeleteFirst, are you in Chicago? If you are, try NPN Parents. You would be surprised how many parents subscribe to that. Second, put the word out on Craigslist events. Third, try using flyers at local playgrounds and coffee shops that you know parents of young children will frequent.
You'll need a lot of books. Funding will be an issue. Is this something you hope to accomplish this quarter, or is this your longterm goal. How are you going to pay for these books, the space, ect? I don't want to burst your bubble, and would love to be as much of a help as I can be to you.
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteThe poster above has some really great input. She's definitely right that you should try to target areas where families with young children go. Newspapers have been dying out over the years, and I don't think it is very likely that you would reach as many people as you would like- especially low-income families who may not be able to fit purchasing newspapers into their budgets. I would encourage you to take flyers to local schools and daycares, as well as social service offices. If possible, try to make flyers in multiple languages.
In regard to running out of books, perhaps you could print slips for families to write down their contact information so that you could contact them when you have more books?
Good luck- this is a fantastic idea!
Hi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI believe this is a wonderful thing your are doing. There are a lot of book store and salvation armies that offer books that might help your cause. I have notice that are just as many book boxes as there are clothes boxes in my community. I would also like to say the posters, flyers, and word of mouth could also get this process started. While watching the news the other day, they were talking about making each newspaper available for everyone who doesn’t subscribe.
I look forward to reviewing your presentation.
ReplyDeleteHi Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI think you can reach people by posting something on Craigslist, on any social networks, print flyers to put in local preschools and elemntary schools. Share your ideas with the library and see if they will let you post something on their info board.
I would also talk to the library about donating books to you. In my area the libraries have sales twice a year to get rid of books that they have a high quantity of. They sell them very cheap. Maybe they would donate ones to you that did not sell. It is always worth asking!
Good luck!!
Rachel,
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are working toward literacy. It is so important for young children to be exposed to books and literacy at such a young age. Thanks for all you have done throughout the course to support with presentations.
